Crafting Garden Markers from Backsplash Panels

garden_markers_3Just three years ago, a friend gave me an herb planter.  While we’ve had a vegetable garden for years and experimented with many vegetables, I never tried herbs.  I’ve found them to be easy to grow and the just picked freshness adds flavor to so many dishes.  Plus, using more fresh herbs amps up my culinary credibility!  It’s wonderful to only have to make a short walk to the garden instead of a quick trip to the store.  My herb garden includes chives, basil, cilantro and lemon balm.  One last bonus is the scent of basil and cilantro while doing yardwork.

So to make my little herb garden a bit more special, I decided to craft garden markers to identify these wonderful little plants.  These were easy to assemble using just 6 items:

- Backsplah panel
- Paint stirrers
- Dowel rod
- Permanent marker
- Glue
- Paint (optional)

Cut the paint stirrers to the desired length of your marker.  Sand the cut edges lightly.  Cut each dowel rod in half for 18″ markers, or shorter if you prefer.  I used square dowels to have a flat surface for better adhesion.  Painting the dowels and wood pieces provides additional protection and adds a decorative touch.  You can leave them unpainted also.

Then measure and cut the backsplash panel by scoring several times with a utility knife.  I made mine slightly smaller than the paint stirrer to eliminate sharp edges.

Peel off the protective coating and using a permanent marker, write the name of the herb on the front of the garden marker.  Using Crazy Glue, glue the backsplash panel to the stirrer and then the stirrer to the dowel rod.

And that’s it.  Creative garden markers to identify all the delightful herbs in my garden.  What herbs do you like to grow?
